Live and reside in one of Munich's most beautiful districts.
The district of Au-Haidhausen originated as a workers' and craftsmen's quarter during the Wilhelminian period and was known as the Glasscherbenviertel until the early 1980s. With the beginning of redevelopment and conversion of the industrial areas into residential areas and cultural venues, gentrification began, which continues to this day, but is almost complete. The wide range of cultural activities on offer (including the Gasteig, Muffatwerk, Auer Dult and Nockherberg) demonstrates the importance of Au-Haidhausen for cultural city life. The square Mariahilfplatz around the neo-Gothic Mariahilf church forms the heart of Au. The great popularity of the residential area of Au-Haidhausen means that the formerly very young student population, who have mixed with the working classes, remain in the neighbourhood despite starting families.
The best residential areas are in the north of the sub-area on the border with Alt-Bogenhausen/ Herzogpark to the east of the Maximilianeum and in the Au, to the east of the Deutsches Museum. Au-Haidhausen is a lively residential area which impresses with its liveable character. Haidhausen is also a quarter with many small cafés and shops, a place where art and culture are at home.
Haidhausen is a lively neighbourhood through and through, yet everything here is a little quieter, smaller and cosier than in Munich's city centre. Several well-kept squares and parks liven up the cityscape. Around the Pariser Platz, many houses were built in the Wilhelminian period, which are now shining again in new splendour thanks to careful renovation. Wiener Platz, with its numerous market stalls, is something like the little brother of the famous Viktualienmarkt.
You will find an oasis full of flowers and tranquility at Weißenbuger Platz. If even more relaxation is desired, you can reach the Isarauen within a very short time. Speaking of relaxation: as soon as the weather permits, the beer gardens become your second living room - there's almost no better way to spend your evening after work! On rainy days, the Müller'sche Volksbad is an attractive meeting place. The bath is built in art nouveau style and is absolutely worth seeing inside and out!
